Hayden as Dix Handley in "The Asphalt Jungle"
Since we're all bestowing gifts on HUAC turncoat bastards like Elia Kazan, let's think for a moment about one of our greatest "guy" actors, Sterling Hayden. Sterling Hayden, a man who acts like Johnny Cash sings, a man whose first name is both an adjective and a currency, a chiseled block of masculinity, a baritone barker of dialogue. Not one many would consider a "good" actor, but, you understand, learning to act and play pretend and get in touch with your feelings is for sissies and chumps!! Yes friends, New Jersey's own Sterling Hayden is the subject of LeisureSuit.net's second Do-It-Yourself Film Festival, where all you need is a video store card and a set of cojones (click here to see the first.)

Let's start with his best, John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle, one of the quintessential film noirs filled with furnished rooms, fall guys, fedoras, crooked cops and loose-lipped dames (the most loose-lipped being Marilyn Monroe in her first film.) Hayden plays Dix, a southern muscle head working for a crime syndicate somewhere in the Naked City. While Dix may not be bright or lucky, he's the only one with any moral compass, and the only one the pedophiliac German doctor can trust during their intricate jewel heist. As with all good caper films, things go slightly awry, dreams and lives are shattered, and, indeed, Dix may never make it back to his Tennessee horse farm.

Hayden's at his prime, I hate to say it, when he acts abusive to his girlfriend, looking so overwhelmed when she springs the "I'm not leavin' withoutcha Dix" once he decides to go out on the lam. He practically winks at the audience, knowing we've been witness to all he's gone through in the past 90 minutes, and he just doesn't need this conversation right now. Of course, the girl does come in handy when Dix needs to tell someone his dreams, lines Hayden recites low with all the emotion of a stock-ticker, as if masculinity is measured in octaves.

Although Dix is a moral character, he is still on the wrong side of the law in The Asphalt Jungle. If it's a true good guy you need, check out Suddenly and Hayden's portrayal of Sheriff Tod. The keeper of peace in this most American of 1950s small towns, one half-expects Sheriff Tod to remind us all to drink our Ovaltine and show us how to "duck and cover".

Big news, though, in the town of Suddenly, when the President's train is expected to pass through. Sheriff Tod revels in the extreme security measures he must take, perhaps only so he can show-off to the war widow, with who's small boy, Pidge, he has an eerie relationship. Wouldn't'cha know that it's at her house that everyone winds up taken hostage by a gang of toughs led by Frank Sinatra in an attempt to kill the President. Oh no! That's just what he wanted not to happen . . . especially in front of her . . . and the little boy!

Some of Sterling's monologues, especially the God Bless America speech to young Pidge, could have been inadvertent kitsch classics. Though when spake from the fine jawbone of Sterling Hayden, a figure so proud and true, we as a nation could hardly question him.

Hayden as "Johnny Guitar"
Hayden's most famous role, that of the late SUNY Professor Nicholas Ray's Johnny Guitar, just shot down many points in my estimation as I've just learned that the French love this movie. Johnny Guitar is an existential western about a saloon keeper, Joan Crawford, who stands up to The Man (in this case the Woman, Mercedes McCambridge) when they try to run her out of town. Hayden busts in on the scene as a real wise-talkin' tough, spitting quotables as if they were tobacco juice ("There's only two things in this world that a 'real man' needs: a cup of coffee and a good smoke".) Crawford and McCambridge do a lot of yelling, which would have good "foxy boxing"-like qualities if either were attractive. Johnny Guitar carries, can you guess?, a guitar, getting a good forty year jump on Robert Rodriguez.

Despite there being reams of frog-speak in various "Cahiers du Cinema", Johnny Guitar is worth checking out for some good fatalistic performances and, dare I say, true grit.

Hayden duking it out as Johnny Clay in "The Killing"
In the same year, though, Hayden starred in Stanley Kubrick's The Killing, arguably the best caper picture ever made. What separates it from The Asphalt Jungle (and, yes, there are similarities) is that The Killing is all about the heist. We see it backwards and forwards, pinpoint exactly where it goes wrong (it always goes wrong), examine everyone's angle, to see what's at stake and who's a snitch. The last shot of the picture sticks a knife right in your heart, despite it being the same from any number of "Gilligan's Island" episodes.

Sterling plays the polar opposite of his Asphalt Jungle persona here. This time it is he who is the mastermind (one strange "intertextual" moment comes when he goes to hire the "Dix" character for the heist), and he has all the dark qualities of . . . well . . . someone who would try and rip-off a race track, this film being made in an era before Trainspotting, Go, and The Newton Boys, when bad guys were still allowed to be bad guys. And did I mention it was at a race track? How friggin' cool is that?

Hayden as General Jack D. Ripper, ordering Armageddon, in "Dr. Strangelove"
Hayden and Kubrick worked together again in the masterpiece Dr. Strangelove: or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. Yes, it was he who played the cigar chomping General Jack D. Ripper who started World War III when he noticed, during the physical act of love, that the Communists were infiltrating our precious bodily fluids, and indeed were planning to continue doing this through children's ice cream.

Hayden's over-the-top performance is an obvious riff on his earlier super-macho roles, but the comedy lies in the sincerity of the performance. Humor comes from Peter Sellers' reaction shots and the framing of Hayden's ridiculous cigar-chomping head. Taken out of this context, each of Sterling's line readings are as true to the "guy" movie ethic as the next war picture.

Hayden, actually acting, as Roger Wade in "The Long Goodbye"
Sterling's last great role was in Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye, one of the few Altman pictures worth watching more than once because, surprise, this one actually has a story. It's cribbed from a Raymond Chandler novel, and S. H. plays a mad Hemmingway-esque character with a beard and fat belly who waxes romantic and howls at the ocean. He gets drunk, insults his wife, sobs and stumbles around with his shirt open. It is a blistering performance by Hayden, finally allowed to play the rugged Type-A Male who isn't just a bag of muscles deadpan shill for evil or good, but a person with feelings, even if nothing scares him more than to elaborate on them. It is his best performance, and it pains me that it comes from a Robert Altman film, a director whose body of work I consider to be horribly overrated.

At around this point in his career, Hayden slipped sleepily into the odd cameo role. Most notably was the Irish cop Michael shoots in The Godfather, The scary Chairman of the Board in the zany 9 to 5, and, basically, the same flashback elderstatesman in both 1900 and King of the Gypsies.

Sterling Hayden is a treasure all guys should delight in. This man is the foundation upon which all other guy actors rest. His dismissal of traditional "good acting", whether intentional or not, jutting chin and rock hard physique secure his position. I'll end with this fact: yes, that absurd name is a Hollywood phony. It is, however, the last name that is false. He was born Sterling Walter. Still acting, but still sterling.

I was fortunate to work for a newspaper guy in the early 1980's who knew and interviewed Sterling Hayden in Boston: George Douglas, who recently published a book about T-Wharf of the same name. For anyone wanting to read more about some of the setting for Wanderer it might be worth checking out.

I just met and became friends with Bill Hood,OSS-CIA and author of Mole the story of the Russian spy to become an American counterspy. He is from Maine as is Sterling Hayden and me. Sterling reminds me of another deceased friend, Gary Merrill who also lived in Maine. I read the Wanderer several years ago and after seeing NBC and the story of the OSS and the famous people involved including Julia child and Sterling Hayden I read excerpts of the Wanderer and can't wait to read it again. Bill Hood wrote several other books. I will be seeing him next week and can't wait to talk about the famous people in the OSS. I already have stories about Bobby and Jack Kennedy and sub-machine guns and when the first guy who was ready to retire from the CIA learned there were no pensions. Anyone interested? Here's an answer to a previous query from Lee in 2007 (!): The SH schooner Wanderer was wrecked on a reef at Rangiroa (Tuamotu Islands, French Polynesia) and for many years (through the 80s and 90s), the wheel of the boat (with ID plaque) could be seen where it was prominently displayed at what used to be the Bali Hai hotel on the island of Raiatea, Society Islands, French Polynesia. The hotel is now called Hawaiki Nui, and I did not see the wheel when I was there in June 2007, though it might still be close by--somewhere. Side note: There is still a statue of Hayden's First Mate Spike Africa at a restaurant in Newport Beach, CA, and of course the 70-foot schooner Spike Africa, named for the legendary man, is also there.

The quality of his movies never equal the quality of his writing. Even those not interested in Hayden the actor must delight in Hayden the man as presented in his frank autobiography "Wanderer" . He tells it all and it is engrossing. The most poignant being his memory of the courage he found as a Marine in WW II juxtaposed against selling out to the Committee on Un-American Activities. He wonders what ever happened to that Marine. Read it.

PJM has it right - The whole HUAC situation fouled up many people's lives no matter what you did. We have to ask ourselves [what would you do] if the FBI came to your front door and let you know that if you don't testify as a "freindly witness", no work, no children, no nothing!. The commity knew everything they wanted to know anyway, they just wanted to make a show of force to the public. HUAC committee chairman Edward Hart was a sociopathic power hungy person. If one reads Hayden book, you get a picture of this insane time in U.S. history.
As to the tapes of Hayden on Tom Snyder's show - contact NBC, I'm sure they can provide copies.

Hi Cliff,
I'm sure that your theory is good. Polonsky was known by the HUAC far before SH gave his name. You say he made "20-30 mostly junky films" : just look at his filmography, and take, for instance, Johnny Guitar (54), The City is Dark (53) The killing (56) which are masterpieces. And as far as I know, the reason why he accepted to give names was that it allowed him to keep custody of his children. SH had only despise for his career and never considered himself as an actor.

To BOLT : if you ever find Tom Snyder's itvs ; could you contact me ? I'd be very interressed. Thanx!

As much as I have admired SH, and enjoyed reading his W. book, I don't know if it has been pointed out sufficiently that the major part of his career (1950 on) was only made possible due of his testimony before the HUAC. If he had not named names, etc., his career in Hollywood would have ended, at least for a decade or more. Even though he hated himself ever after for this testimony, nevertheless he took this step to protect his career, along with his eventual financing of all his yachting adventures. The result was his ability to make 20-30 mostly junk films after that. The irony is that if he had stood up for his ideals, no easy thing at that time, he would probably still have had a chance to come back in the mid '60's to do his most famous part in Dr. Strangelove, if not others. He helped to destroy some creative artists by his actions (e.g., A. Polanski) while safeguarding his own interests. The sad thing is that SH was one of the most irreverent of the Hollywood types, yet even he was not able to stand up for what he believed. Ah SH, ah humanity.

I just noticed this web site and thought I would mention to interested Marin locals that the men's reading group of which I have been a member is discussing SH's Wanderer in mid April. I have just read it and thought it great, of course. I have also talked to some old timers a bit about Sausalito and Hayden, and also talked to his son Christian. It seems from a brief perusal of the web site that there was a documentary made about SH which I would be interested in viewing.I have seen some of his movies also. Does anyone have any information regarding whether Hayden himself finished the novel "Voyage" and, if not, why and who did finish it?

My reason for asking is that, toward the end of the book, certain descriptions did not seem to be those of a seaman, a distinct difference from the first two thirds of the book. There also seemed to be a certain quality in the last third, roughly, as if the writer had become anxious to finish it or had just lost interest in it.

Thanks for any opinion or other reply.

Cheers.

in the early 60's my girlfriend lived in a little apartment on bridgeway, right across from the triden and ondine. hayden's schooner was moored at the trident's dock. one morning i awakened early, just a little at dawn, and was staring out the window, nursing a bit of a hangover and a cup of black coffee. it was a somewhat foggy morning and i was very surprised to suddenly see hayden, across the street, striding down the sidewalk. he was dressed in jeans and a navy pea-coat whose collar was pulled up around his neck. since he was a tall man his stride was quite long. right behind him, in order of height (tallest first) came his four children. each of them were matching his step, which required great effort on their part. then after ten yards or so his caravan faded into the mist. the sight of hayden and his brood, under those circumstances, left a great impression on me. in a few days he sailed away for tahiti.

I can't tell you what a pleasant surprise it was to find this forum, and although I've discovered many new bits of information about the fascinating human being (forget "actor") Sterling Hayden was, it seems this site has left FAR more questions about the man than answers ---- I mean, who IS Lorna, and why all the secrecy and innuendo about so many other aspects of Sterling's life and subsequent events...???

Like so many others, the book Wanderer is why I am here, so to Mr. Hayden's family, specifically his children, I ask, is it not time that this great man be given the respect that is due to him? Millions of readers have learned how lucky you were to have him as a father ----indeed, the book itself documents that he treated you as veritable kings and queens --- and I can only imagine how many American kids wish that they could even dreamed of having such devoted fathers and amazing childhoods as yours. Don't you think it is time that Sterling receive the proper respect due to him --- even just a simple family tribute website ---so that all those who were not able to enjoy the wealth of Boston University's archives could learn of his amazing journey???

As a historian --- and a New Englander -- I have learned many things about research and attempting to preserve the truth about vanishing American culture before it is lost. Therefore, to the Haydens, all I can say is that Sterling has been gone twenty years, most of his friends are gone, and you all shall not live forever. PLEASE consider being more generous in releasing Sterling's journals and personal information before it is simply too late. The alternative is that he will simply be remembered from a distance as just one more vague, glamorized Hollywood movie icon... and it is clear from his writings that he was so much more than that.

Thank-you.

AS A SMALL BOY, IN 1954,I WATCHED JOHNNY GUITAR, AND ADMIRED HIM AS ONLY SMALL BOYS CAN.

LATER I BOUGHT HIS WANDERER, IN 1964, AND IT PUT ANOTHER DIMENSION ONTO THE ACTOR.

HAVING HAD FOUR UNCLES WHO FOUGHT HITLER, I HAD A PERSPECTIVE ON 'MEN WHO HAD BEEN TO WAR', AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIS SERVICE WITH THE YUGOSLAV PARTISANS, AND THEIR FIGHT AGAINST THE INVADERS, MADE ME ADMIRE HIM FROM MY ADULT MALE PERSPECTIVE. I'M SORRY HE FELT SO BADLY ABOUT HIMSELF, BECAUSE, HISTORY HAS PROVEN, THAT THE COMMUNISTS WERE INDEED SEEKING POWER OVER THE AMERICAN MEDIA.
UNFORTUNEATLY THE ONES WHO CRITISIDED HIM AND OTHERS FOR TALKING TO HUAC, HAVE NEVER BEEN CONFRONTED WITH THEIR LIES AND DISTORTIONS THEY TOLD ABOUT MEN SUCH AS REAGAN, HAYDEN ET-AL AS THEY JUSTIFIED THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE LEFT-WING SPIN THEY PUT ONTO EVENTS AT THAT TIME,

His last name isn't false in the same way that Tab Hunter and Rock Hudson are made up names. His father died when he was young and his mother remarried a Mr. Hayden. Sterling took his name as a boy. Also he first became interested in Communism while fighting Nazis with Tito in Yugoslavia while serving in the Marine Corp.during WWII, according to the chapter about him in the book "Reel Heroes to Real Heroes"

Kathy, I lived in the area back then and I don't recall a caboose on fuel tanks. He did own a 1896 Pullman business railcar which was located at Tiki Junction just North of town in 1966-67 where he started to write his novel Voyage. In 1975 Sterling rented a tugboat, down among all the houseboats. Here is where Voyage was finished, then published in 1976. Sauslito was a much more interesting place back then. Today it's sort of like a wealthy resort town, too bad.

Hi Bill, I happen to own a piece of artwork sold by Milton Darling. Your "Stirling Hayden" autograph was part of an extensive collection of autographs acquired by Mr. Darling over many years. He moved to Nebraska in 1880 from Dorcester, Mass. He was a warden and charter member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He also ran a semi-successful art dealership from around 1907 to 1933. He was also an avid supporter and patron of the arts in Omaha from the late 1800s to his death on May 6th, 1948 at the age of 87.
I have some further details about him, if you'd like to know more. You can also contact the Douglas County Historical Society on the web to obtain copies of a few news articles about him. I hope this info is helpful to you. Cheers!

what a cranky, eccentric, gifted sonofabitch hayden was. i have nothing but admiration for him. okay, so he gave up names during the mc carthy hearings,. but other than that he really did kick amazing ass. my fave hayden moments: when he tells dabney coleman in "nine to five" that he plans to open a venezuela branch office and he's JUST the man for the job..i love the way coleman gets wimpy and tries to say "oh, wouldn't that be awfully far away?" and hayden barks, "nonsense!" ; so cool. the other one is where mc clusky grabs his throat just before toppling over, in "godfather" ;; al pacino having moments before shot him in the head and throat. i didn't eat eggplant parmigiana for awhile after that but, hey what the hell. robinson, (as hayden might say) you're an okay kid....

Jordan Hoffman's statement at the end of this article "that absurd name is a Hollywood phony" is simply wrong information. Yes, his birth sir-name was Walter. His step fathers name was Hayden and therefore he went by the name Sterling Hayden from the age of 10 onward. The studio had him spell Sterling with an i instead of an e in 1940-41. Maybe after four years, it's time to correct this article?

I was working for a utility in Marin County when exiting my truck I see Mr. Hayden looking out towards the San Francisco Bay. We greeted each other and I told him that Chris and I had attended high school together. I left a little later and had forgotten a chock block that I had used behind a tire. Upon returning I see that it wasn't there and figured that Mr. Hayden had taken it. As I was looking for it he came out of "nowhere" and asked, "Are you looking for your chock block?" "Yes," I said. "I have it." He went to his car and returned it to me.
A lot of questions went thru my mind and I had hoped that I could have talked with him longer.
Then sometime later I read that he passed away.
I always thought that he knew what was going to happen to him and he was just wanted to see places that he had known.

In Wanderer (p. 279), S. Hayden wrote, remembering his first diner with M. Carroll : "She wants money enogh to throw herself in the war somehow ; to support some children, forty of whom even now are in occupied Paris, dependant on her for survival" : does anybody know if S. Just wanted to thank you for this web page devoted to Sterling Hayden, one of my favorite screen heroes. He was truly an American original. No actor alive today comes even close to projecting on to film the kind of "take-no-prison ers and take-no-bull" intensity that he had. But that is clearly because he was a real person who lived a real life, not a Hollywood phoney. It's a shame that today's movie industry would probably prevent a real man like him from appearing in film. Fortunately we have the silver screen record of a sterling silver performer, Sterling Hayden, to enjoy forever. Thanks again.

I have a used book shop in the Boston area and in recent years the demand for Sterling's autobiography has really increased. It's in reprint, but original hard covers from 1963 are in great demand. He was so well regarded in the Boston-Gloucester area, and every so often an old timer comes in who knew Sterling from the Fishermans Races of the 1930s. They say he was one great sailor and person, also kind of shook his head at the whole movie thing, not knowing what to make of it. Now that it's been close to 20 years since his death, his image as a 20th century icon seems to be gaining. All should find a copy of 'Wanderer' and read it!

I remember Sterling best from 9 to 5 when I was memorizing this entire movie during my adolescent, budding homosexual years. (Indeed, this is a movie loved by a great many queens, mainly because it was written by one.)

Good luck renting 1900, as stocking this movie could get your local video merchant arrested for peddling child pornography. Somewhere in the frist 30 minutes of this movie is a scene of two adolescent boys masturbating in a barn. When a bomb goes off outside, they both run to the window; the long shot revealing their bobbing twin flesh soldiers in unmistakable states of arousal.

Hayden And Kubrick were very different types of people but they both did things their way. Kubrick was refused access to any race tracks in California for the filming of 'The Killing' (the race commission didn't want to have anything to do with a movie about robbing a race track!), so he built his own betting area set to get the movie made and in Dr. Strangelove the Air Force refused access to B-52 aircraft ( they didn't like a comedy about nuclear war that included US airplanes & air bases), so through his own research of declassified documents recreated a cockpit of a B-52.....he Air force was stunned how accurate his cockpit was. Many said at the time that both movies would be complete failures. Today, they're among the greatest movies ever made. Sterling does his part, convincing you he is exactly who he plays in the films, some of his best performances!

It's interesting movie history that amung Sterlings most rememorable films were Stanley Kubrick projects, 'The Killing'; 1956 and 'Dr. Stranglove'; 1963. In 1956 Kubrick was virtualy unknown film maker who insisted on getting Hayden as the lead, saying at the time "He creates a realism like no other actor in Hollywood". I5's amazing he landed him for the part since sterling was getting 35,000 a picture in the mid 50's which was way above Kubricks budget. Again Stanley insisted on Hayden for the part of Jack Ripper in Strangelove, one of the scariest comedy's ever made. This was the only movie Sterling did in a ten year absence from acting. Kubrick is remembered as one of the greatest movie makers of the 20th century, who knew what he was doing when casting Sterling in these timeless films!

I do think Sterling Hayden was a fascinating fellow, which is why I have read WANDERER five times! I also think that merely being in New York City at the time of the 9-11 mass homocide does not qualify as surviving a terrorist attack, this is stupid hyperbole and claiming more experience than reality on part of the editors, and grossly unfair to the families who lost loved ones in the tragedy and actual survivors!
Also, Sterling Hayden's credible screen performances are undoubtably a result of the real life experiences he acquired on fishing schooners and in interesting military service with the O.S.S. (i.e. CIA). I think he regretted having been duped into joining the communist party more than joyfully cooperating with Senator McCarthy and the HUAC.
Regardless of what you think, Sterling Hayden's broad life experiences make all this chatter relevant.
The more I read WANDERER, the more I admire this man's almost mystical journey through life. He put himself out to experience unique life experiences which the normal human being would miss. This gave Sterling Hayden an almost priestly insight into life which he alluded in his autobiography. Sterling Hayden never laid claim to an experience in which he did not participate!

Sterling Hayden fought with the partisans in Yugoslavia because that was what the Marine Corp. assigned him to do! The communists in Yugoslavia were fighting against the NAZIS and the communists in China were fighting against IMPERIAL JAPAN; so the United States sent agents to both theaters to cooperate with the commies; both Chou En Lai and Tito were once allies of the United States. Sterling Hayden never stopped being a Marine (there is no such thing as an 'Ex' Marine!) and he never stopped cooperating with the Federal government: either in an active duty capacity or as a civilian actor. He was disillusioned with the economic determinism of Communism, it didn't set well with his free spirited approach to life. Sterling Hayden publically regretted cooperating with the H.U.A.C. but privately celebrated his contribution to ferreting out a lot of commie Hollywood ratfink actors. He should do the same thing today to all the anti-war/pro-terrori st Hollywood actors promoting defeatism on national T.V.

In my opinion, Captain Sterling Hayden, as a member of the nascent O.S.S., only joined the communist party in 1946 for the purpose of infiltration to identify actual leaders, both in Europe and in Hollywood. In my view, Sterling Hayden willingly and gladly cooperated with the FBI to ferret out the commie rats in Hollywood. The sleazy history of commie espionage in the U.S., as fully revealed in the "Verona Decrypts", demonstrated that communism was really a threat to all Western Democracies; and the American response to a very real commie threat was both the McCarthy hearings and FBI surveilance. Sterling Hayden gained my respect for his productive cooperation in the H.U.A.C.; and I am not aware of the lives or careers of 'innocent people' being ruined by Senator Joe McCarthy or the H.U.A.C.! There is a big difference between free speech (no matter how irresponsible) and actual membership or activity in dangerous and subversive organizations like the communist party in the 1950s, or the al-Quaida today! Again, if only Captain Sterling Hayden were around in the 21st century so he could infiltrate Hollywood and identify any actors who belong to al-Quaida versus holding irresponsible opinions against the war on terrorism in Iraq, and hopefully, North Korea. Sterling Hayden was an anti-cultist!!

It might help to have a little perspective on this time in history regarding Hayden. He himself had attended Communist party meetings for about six months in 1946 after having fought with Tito's Communist forces against the Germans in the war, and had friends in the party. Realizing the party had nothing to offer to anyone in the U.S., he stopped going. In 1951 was forced into testifing as a ' friendly witness' by the FBI for having been involved. McCarthy was denounced by congress for his shameful actions that ruined the lives of many innocent people. McCarthy may have had the right idea, but went way over the top. Sterling said many times in his life that the one thing he regretted in his life, was his testimony for HUAC, it haunted him his whole life. Of course Communism is totaly wrong, but this era in history is known as a time when many people on both sides made big mistakes!

flushing out the filthy reds in American society! The inciteful Elia Kazan was denounced by his fellow travellers for his truthful testimony against communist subterfuge in the film industry;
and the wise Sterling Hayden aided that process by naming names and bouncing a lot of filthy reds out of the business. If only Capt. Hayden were alive today so he could do the exact same

As with many people who pick up a drink, a bond is formed with the drink. Sterling didn't drink until he was about 22, but at this time was in the world of drinking, hard living sailors life, then Hollywood. There were unsettled aspects of his life, was a restless, driven person and the drink just fit in. As with most who enjoy it, as the years go by, it just progresses, then your trapped. Like many of us who end up in this position, we can see no way to live life with out booze, being psychologicaly, physically crippled. Hayden, being so well known and in his later years having the image of the hard living sailor, writer made matters worse. He did spend a fair amount of time later in his life not drinking, but did fall back into it. Like anyone in this position, one has to reshape the way we think and conduct our life. I myself stopped in 1977 and I certainly enjoy life much more then the 25 years I drank, allows me to be present or my own life!

Why? There's no mention of abnormal alcohol abuse in his youth in his autobiography, Wanderer, why or
how or when did he addict himself to alcohol? Something
was definately eating him in his adult life. Are his psychiatric

I remember once seeing a film where Sterling played a pilot on a DC-3 where the plane crash-landed in a jungle. There, the crew and passengers had to make the choice of which 5 people flew out on the damaged plane, and which 3 would be left behind. Nehemiah Persoff was also in the picture, and played one of the three who stayed behind. He was a "bad" guy who had no apparent good qualities, but showed up to be a hero in that he agreed to stay behind and kill the other two people and then be tortured to death by the local natives. Anyone there who can tell me the name of the picture? And if it may be available anywhere? It was a remake of a movie done in the 40's with a very young Lucille Ball starring as one of the passengers....

Sterling was comfortable in the heavy roles, and this is what he is remembered for today; films like 'The killing', 'Dr. Strangelove' in addition to about 25 action pictures done in the 1950's. Even in one of his last movies, '9 to 5' in 1980, playing the no nonsense chairman at the end of the movie. In an interview may years ago, Sterling said "playing Dix was one of the few roles I enjoyed, a guy who just wants to get the hell out of the mess he's in" When the director of 'Asphalt Jungle', John Huston learned of Sterling's death in 1986, he remarked "Sterling Hayden had a great soaring spirit-truly a king among men."

I was searching "Sterling Hayden Interviews" on AskJeeves.com and came up with the above link. Seems the lad's Mother liked Sterling Hayden, too. The information about his birth name is under the Mercury News section. Born Sterling Hayden Christensen goes by Hayden Christensen. He is the "young" Darth Vader in the continuing episodes of STAR WARS. He was also in LIFE AS A HOUSE w/Kevin Kline. I thought this bit of info was interesting. . .

I saw the Sterling Hayden interview with Tom Snyder in 1977. It had an impact on my philosophical views ever since. I have been trying to obtain a copy of it, but without success. I see that Gayle [message 6-26-02]has an audio tape of that interview. I wonder if could get a copy from her. Please E-mail me at alpisank@aol.com

Between 1958-68 Sterling made only one movie, but he could not have picked a more powerful film to do. It was of course Stanley Kubrick's DR. STRANGELOVE which was humorous yet a scathing and timely indictment of the military and the cold war nuclear arms race. The movie is a comedy about the destuction of civilization ! When it was released in 1964, the public laughed, but then wondered what they were laughing at because it seemed so possible that a general could go mad (Sterling) and start a nuclear war. It did well in the theaters and is a cult classic today. Sterling plays general Ripper, and has perhaps the scariest role in the film because of his strong resemblance to real life SAC commander Thomas S. Power, who during the Kennedy administration had command over the nuclear force of the US. Hayden is great in this movie, a movie that has now been voted one of the 100 most important movies ever made!

The family is rather private and doesn't want to discuss the activities of the children.

Christian is alive though..and I spoke to Andrew a few months back. Very nice fella...seems to be making out with life relatively ok.

That's about all I can tell you. (not that I have any secrets!)

Thank you Chris and Thank you Betty Hayden for answering the question concerning the ring Sterling wore on his pinkie in the movie SO BIG. This website is wonderful!
May I be so forward as to ask about the children and their (now) adult lives? Just some basic info because of their desire for privacy is respected.
I was fortunate to purchase a hardbound copy of the book WANDERER and was deeply moved by Sterling penning his life, warts and all. The novel VOYAGE is (at this very moment) winging its way to me as another purchase via the Internet. And, my bid on e-Bay "won" a VHS of Johnny Guitar for a tiny sum of $1.82 + S&H of $2.95!
While on the subject of the movie Johnny Guitar, years ago I was fortunate to purchase a paperback copy of the book by Roy Chanslor. It is an original .25 cent Pocket Book edition published in July, 1954. The book is dedicated to Joan Crawford -- plus, Ms Crawford wrote a commentary on the fly sheet. It's kinda worn, but still a treasure to me!
I have enjoyed reading the posted messages from the "fans" of Sterling Hayden. I hope the site will continue to be a meeting place of sorts for those who wish to know more about this man who lived, loved and left lasting impressions on all of us in one way or another.
