The chick half of the victorious New York Enforcers, a.k.a. "The Evil Empire"
A few hours ago my co-editor Kerry Douglas Dye handed me a tape and said, "TNN is running Roller Derbies. Take a look." I initially flashed on a tongue-in-cheek 70's nostalgia trip, but the tape showed something quite different. Like the recent Kiss Komeback, the WSL (World Skating League) is a fearful cultural leftover bereft of any irony or shame.

The recent broadcast opened with a sterling voice-over about Roller Derby’s importance in the last generation. This was spoken over images in Black and White . . . images from a time when broadcast was all done in color. This then exploded into a proactive and in-my-face montage of extreme roller derby action. This was the new, modern, updated Derby for the Millennium, Roller Jam(TM). I was then introduced to two clowns who would narrate the excitement. Wouldntcha know one of ‘em had a zany nickname like Goose. It was during their intro that I realized that everything had been horribly scripted and pre-taped. I could tell because all the cuts were miserably edited, leading me to believe that the whole operation was too low-budget for more than one camera.

Before any of the stellar action could begin, there was one more segment . . . where the two team captains would mouth off in a pre-pre-taped interview about how much the other team captain used to be a good friend, but had so wronged her both on and off the track that, well, this game was gonna be personal.

The two Paula Jones-type characters spun a strange Rashamon-like tale concerning an apartment they once shared, and how one was drunk, but yet one threw the first punch, and one chased another down a flight of stairs, on and on. These are tough girls, you're lead to believe, though both have slender athletic bodies, shiny shampooed hair, and feel that one can only redeem herself on skates.

The teams came out. The New York Somethings ["The Enforcers" -- ed.] (in black, the baddies, the tough team, according to the wise and objective commentators who missed the WWF call) were booed; they made brash comments to the fans. The Florida Somethings ["The Sundogs" -- ed.] were sunny and bright, sparkling with clean white teeth, and curve-fitting low-top shirts. When they started to warm up, hunched over, I started to see some of the fun of Derby.

Up to this point I had my cynical cap on, sneering at the clods and clowns who couldn’t see through this crass commercialism, this fraud of a so-called sporting match. So obviously fixed, so obviously cut together months later. Then, when play began, I found myself horribly lost. I had no way of following the intricate rules of this game.

The game, technically a RollerJam(TM), is different from a traditional Roller Derby, although the only difference I could notice was that broadcasters of a Roller Jam(TM) shout the word "Jam!" loudly and without context.

The women (men play too, but I fast-forwarded through that) bend over and show their sweet tushies to the camera as they spin around in circle . . . well, ovals. Then some bump into each other. Usually one of the colliders will spring over the track's edge with a force incongruous to the amount of force which has hit them. It is then when the commentator will shout "Jam!"

The spinning lasts a moment or so, and then some points appear on the screen. If the team in lighter colors has higher points, the audience applauds. If not, they boo.

Between spins, the women are forced to play-act their rivalries. It’s even sadder than the acting in a porno, because many of these women have genuine athletic ability. How many gymnastics lessons did their single parent drive them to in Little Rock? More than mine . . . I can’t hardly manage on those in-line skates.

Oh, yes, they’re on in-line skates. That’s part of what makes it modern.

There’s a Web site for you to click to, if you're interested, but I forget its address (www.rollerjam.com -- ed.) and hope never to have to watch that tape again . . .

You need to face reality. You will never EVER meet Stacey Blitch and if you do she won't even give you a second look. Stop living in the fantasy and start living in reality. I just want to comment on something I've noticed. An on going trend that I truly dislike. How come everyone is so hung up on the skater's looks? It's always... this person is hot... and crap like that. Just watch the show and enjoy it for it's entertainment value or please don't watch it at all. If you watch a show based completely on the looks of a few people I'm honestly embarrassed for you. If you want to email me and tell me I suck... all I have to say is go for it...

I spent some time reading down the page and I'm excited to see that Rollerjam has become so popular. (It puzzles me why people who dislike Rollerjam are looking up Rollerjam sites) But I realize idiots will be idiots... I love the skating, the fighting, the storyline, but most of all I simply love the skaters. (I also wonder why people would waste there time bad mouthing Rollerjam and posting it) But like I said earlier... idiots will be idiots... Rollerjam is just a fun show to watch and I encourage the show to get as extreme as possible.
My favourite skaters are Jaime Conemac, Shay Brown, Christian Salvia, and Brian Gallagher.
I'm always up to talking about Rollerjam.

Hi all,
I've been reading all of the comments here and I really feel that Rollerjam is one of the best sports in the world.
Rollerjam is so famous that its even shown on TV in Singapore where I'm staying. People who love speed and action will definetly love watching Rollerjam.
I do really think that Heather Gunnin is really a fast skater and definetly has it all but its Denise Loden whom I feel conqueres the female. She's not only fast but she even ever put on a man's jammer helmet on for her team and scored the winning points.
Rollerjam is the Best!!!

If TNN really wanted to be fair, get a hold of some of the old Roller Games film and show them along with the Roller Jam film and you would see that Roller Games as well as being scripted, was done better with Buddy Jr and the likes of his group. I still get a little upset that this stuff from Mr Lode, but realize that is by design. I would like to see them come to the northeast. I have driven in the old days 50, 60, and early 7s's as far as a hundred miles to watch a game. Please get more professional. Thank you

Maybe before you start bashing something you should watch it a couple of times and watch it more than once.

Hi, Senior Editor Kerry Douglas Dye here. I'm mentioned at the beginning of this article as the guy who gave Hoffman the tape of RollerJam(TM) and asked him to review it.

In retrospect, he probably wasn't the best choice to write the review, since, as many Yakkers have pointed out, he seemed to prejudge the show, fast-forwarded through much of it, and didn't really give it a fair shake.

I blame myself for that. I know Hoffman to be a typical cynical, somewhat snobbish New Yorker, who was bound to have a kneejerk bias against a show whose target audience is primarily Southerners, the less educated, and, you know, perverts looking for a cheap thrill.

In, retrospect, I probably should have reviewed the show myself, as I'm much more open minded.

But thanks for all your comments!

Subject: Fans Say Otherwise
-- Feb 10, 2000 at 7:15PM
As Editor in Chief of RollerJam magazine, I spend a great deal of time reading emails and snail mails from fans of RollerJam.

Although RollerJam has changed a LOT since the beginning, it is being heralded as exciting, fun, and very competitive. It is finding its niche and gaining popularity from all walks of life.

The fans of RollerJam are not few. The sheer bulk of mail I get tells me this.

Although you watched the women skate and fast forwarded through the men (DON'T get me started on how sexist that statement is), I think RollerJam deserves another chance to be reviewed, perhaps by someone who will take the time to watch the show, who will get into the mindset of what it is all about, and learn the names of the teams they are watching.

The new shows and upcoming ones are some really creative mixtures of drama and athleticism and I believe that you will surprise even yourself after you see the show (on regular speed).

As for your editor handing you a tape and telling you that TNN is running Roller Derbys, it's no wonder you panned it.

We aren't Roller Derby. We are RollerJAM and yes, the emphasis is on JAM. We are striving every week to give the fans what they want and from what they have told me, they are really enjoying the new, wild style of RollerJam.

Hey, give it a second chance. The chicks have even skimpier outfits on so you should really enjoy their segment (never mind that they do some incredible things on the track!)

Oh, and don't forget to watch the men's periods as well. I know how hard that is for you, but these guys turn it up several notches and do things that I can't even imagine attempting without skates on.

Didn't anyone ever tell you to give something a real chance before judging it?

As the publisher of RollerJam Magazine, I would just like to echo the sentiments of Karen.
If you wish to review something and then post it, at least watch the whole thing, perhaps dare I suggest watch a few of the shows.
You cannot make an informed judgement by watching just one episode, especially on the FF button.
I am the first to admit that RollerJam has taken it's time to find a direction, but I would like to invite you guys to watch the current shows and the set airing in 3 weeks and then render a judgement.
RollerJam airs on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9-10pm ET/PT on TNN.

I find it hard to believe you feel you can write an objective review when you "fast forwarded" through 1//2 the show. (You don't condone the T&A yet you ONLY wached thw women skate. How convenient!)

These people work their tails off on that track, something I encourage YOU to try to do, and they have gotten steadily more entertaining as time has gone on.

Yes there is T & A. Welcome to the year 2000!! This isn't Roller Derby and doesn't want to be. I am avid fan and I belong to a group of Jam fans who feel you were so off the mark and cynical that you should be told a thing or two!!

Storylines are better than those of WWF, certainly WCW, and ECW.

Women actually have a place to shine rather than just be eye candy for men (like YOU) to watch, and they ARE tough, even though they don't all look like Nicole Bass.

I have been a skater myself (not on TV or anything) and I can tell you, doing a bulldog on inlines, on a track like that can kill someone if it is not done right. Since no one has died, I can say these people know what they are doing and make it look simple.

It's not.

Get with it and watch the show (don't fast forward through parts, or else you look like what you are, BIASED)

Rollerjam is the sport we want to watch and there are 1219 of us in our little family of email friends.

We all take offense at this silly attempt at a review.

I'm from Germany and I was into wrestling some time ago. But there were guys who knew how to act.
It's a shame when you see the potential of some of the athletes, but all that this "sports event" is about seems to be girls' tits in tight uniforms (sorry to put it like that) and guys bashing each other.
Just watch the "explanation" of the "rules"... girls who put out their bottoms like that are either desperate or badly hurt in the back.
Another uncalled-for comment: the overuse of exclamation marks does NOT make articles more believable - just more unreadable...
