you are very wrong...jason falkner is truly an incredibly underated 'artist'. TOO many get branded with the title artist and fall far short of the mark; first by becoming so full of themselves!

I'm a fair critic. If I don't like an album right away, I take a moment to think about the hard work that must have gone into its creation (i.e., the songcraft, the time spent teaching new material to studio musicians, the knob-twisting and level-adjusting, the title, the cover.) If lightning doesn't strike upon first listen, I usually give it three more tries.

I gave Jason Falkner's upcoming release, "Can You Still Feel?", five chances. In fact, I intended to bring it to my boyfriend's house and mull it over once again (and to give it a fawning review once it had clicked.)

On Friday night, amid the hasty shoving of clothes into a plastic bag, makeup into a purse, and the general rush of leaving one's home for the weekend, I forgot to bring "Can You Still Feel?" with me--indicative of my level of enthusiasm for this CD.

Fans of the "power pop" genre (shimmering guitars, major sevenths, falsettos, an eternal debt to Alex Chilton and Wings-era McCartney) know Falkner from his contributions to Jellyfish's first album, and from his membership in pop-nerd supergroup The Grays (also featuring Jon Brion, producer to Aimee Mann and Rufus Wainwright.) His first solo album, "Jason Falkner Presents Author Unknown" (1996), garnered Pavlovian responses in fans, critics, and disc jockeys (when I was on Wednesday morning graveyard duties at my college radio station, I once broadcast the album in its entirety.) Everyone wanted more. The Grays' one release, "Ro Sham Bo" (from 1994), was out of print much longer than it was in print, and despite having taped the Falkner tracks on the decks in WHRW's CD library way back when, it wasn't until a month ago that I found two copies of the coveted disc in a bin marked 88 CENTS. Dudes in record stores wondered, in hushed tones of reverence, what Falkner would do next.

His new album comes out on Tuesday. It's Sunday now. How do I announce to my power pop friends that Falkner as a solo artist has fallen prey to the old soph jinx?

I feel I've reserved judgement enough. The songs on "Can You Still Feel?" lack the energy or hooks of "Author Unknown". Falkner starts strong with "Author Unknown" (must have been an outtake from its namesake album), after a brief piano intro, and quickly loses momentum. There are only a few songs I could hum after hearing them, and even a glance at the track listing wouldn't help me remember which ones they are.

My dad said the same thing about Donald Fagen's "Kamakiriad", after twenty-some-odd years of Steely Dan worship. I wouldn't place Falkner's previous output on a pedestal with the mighty Dan's, but I'm sure more than a couple of 40-year-old Raspberries fans and 22-year-old Sugarplastic fans will play "Can You Still Feel?" in full five times, and leave the room on the sixth to surf the 'net for information on the new Big Star tribute album.

Nevertheless, I'll give it another shot once I get home.

I feel that Jason’s work lacks nothing. “Can you still feel?” F- yea, I can still feel. Can’t you feel the amazing energy that comes out of this guy’s work? God damn!, there's passion in this guys art. His two solo albums have opened a musical door for me that I never knew existed. The music I write has never been the same since. I just saw Jason play bass, live for the French band “AIR”. What can he not play beautifully. And live, as a solo artist with his current band (playing guitar), you see the genius in the guy as the songs flow. Jason is keeping something very special alive. My Girlfriend is taking guitar lessons after seeing Jason perform for the first time. The first thing she said after the show was," that was what that guy was supposed to do in life". I agreed and replied, “focus must be genius”. I just have to laugh at people who can criticize an Artist’s work by comparing it to there “last album”. I would never want Jason’s records to sound the same!!! Or Donald Fagan for that matter. (Thank’s for the additional negitve comment DAD!) Why? It would tell me that the label has given their artist a script to write by. Naaa. People grow Jody. They are actually living life, having new experiences between albums! Yea…, Really! The record company doesn’t put their asses on a shelf for safe keeping. I cannot say, I have ever read an article where a true artist has said that same dribble. It is not something an artist would say. “The little light’s aren’t twinkling Clark”. Remember that Beth? Ask. By the way Jo Beth, did you take a moment, before the frantic rush to get your things together, to figure out that Jason plays all the instruments (except strings) on his albums? No one to hire for this one really. Take that off you checklist. I understand (sort of) the need for critics, I just remember something my Grandfather Ray once told me, “if you don’t have something positive to say……. Whoops, there go the critics. Damn, now I’m guilty too! Beth, I truly think critiquing bands like No Doubt and Bush would be more you speed.

I was first introduced to Jason Falkner as the guitar player of an incredibly new and exciting band called Jellyfish. I worked at a local music chain and saw "Bellybutton" in the promos that had come in one day. I played it because the album cover looked interesting. Little did I know that I'd soon be listening to it constantly and that Jellyfish would become one of my favorite groups of all time. Of course I was horrified when they broke up and couldn't understand why Mariah Carey was still releasing material, but one of the best pop bands ever was going to vanish. Several years later I found out that Jason Falkner had hooked up with some other guys and released an album as The Grays. Not as strong as Jellyfish, but I still enjoyed it. Actually, I spent my time only listening to Jason's songs. Then I heard the Grays split and Jason had released a solo album which took me FOREVER to find!!!! I can honestly say that "Author Unknown" is one of the best albums released in the 90's. It is pure pop genius! I, too, had high expectations when I heard the 2nd album was coming out and hoped it would not fall under the sophomore jinx. While I don't think "Can You Still Feel?" is as strong as an album as the first, it is pretty damn good. It took me a few listening to get used to it, but once I did I really started picking up on a lot of the little things Falkner so masterfully works into his music. "Author Unknown" and "Holiday" are two examples of just simply GREAT songs!! Keep up the great work, Jason...... rock 'n roll NEEDS you!!!!!

While this is a very good album;too many of the songs arent as developed as the 1st album(She Goes to bed and Follow Me actually date back to Jellyfish) particularly some of the material in the middle of the album sounds overaranged and as a result has an overly excessive "playing the studio" sound. This is a little disappointing inasmuch as the material in spots doesn'hold up as well as the five songs written for the Greys.Nonetheless all of the songs are enjoyable with Revelation scaling the heights of Jellyfish excellence.I'm never ceased to be amazed at the high quality of music associated by Mr.Falkner as well as Lyle Workman (reunited with Roger in Beck's band) as well as Tim Smith(Sheryl Crow) -his "The Wannabes" from the Umajets Demolotion sounds could easily fit in thematicaly and quality-wise with a projected Jellyfish third release.Buy the karmically correct vinyl copy of Jason's new album via mail from Not Lame records where it doesnt suffer as much from from compression and digititis. Its shockingly inexpensive and you get more songs including Eno's "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More".

Your review of Jason Falkners CD is so far off base and in your review you shamelessly plug your old radio station, talk about your boyfriend, your dad,and makeup. This is supposed to be a review of a great CD not a place for you to vent about your personal life.

You are nuts. This might not be as hooky as Author Unknown, but the songs and arrangements are beautiful.
What are you, goofy?
