Someone at the Frito-Lay head office is monkeying with greatness!

Doritos were always my favorite snack. Nowhere in nature exists the flavor one finds in a Dorito. Same goes with the color. As a kid, I thought not of these mysteries of science, I only knew that if I was good I'd get my beloved orange triangles in my lunchbox. Soon thereafter I learned that one could get an additional flavor boost if one made sure to place the darker-orange side face down on one's tongue. The day I made this discovery still rings fresh in my memory, as if great Strauss refrains sang from the snack choruses of heaven.

Doritos were the saltiest, the cheesiest, and were sufficient in the crunch department, unlike those pusillanimous Cheese Doodles or Jax. Doodles and Jax were amorphous corn-cheese air tubes with no substance, and, the so-called "Cheese that goes crunch", Cheetoes, did nothing but answer the philosophical question, "What would a Doodle look like if the air was sucked out?" ‘Toes were hard, rocklike orange salt-corn bits that we posited were made from real toes, until we got a little older and decided they were in fact cheese covered scrotum. On a related note, Cheese Balls were acceptable, but perhaps only for the perfect otherworldliness sphere-shaped snacks boast when eaten during viewings of Voltron.

The tortilla aspect of Doritos was the avenue HQ rode up when they first tried to diversify, with "plain" (for use with salsa, I presume) and "taco" (with a slightly spicy, shook-on additive). Neither took off. Indeed, it wasn't until "Cool Ranch Doritos" that the gang had a successful spin-off. Cool Ranch was a masterpiece. A flavor as unique as the original Nacho Cheese. In fact, after the monumental success of Cool Ranch, one now needed to refer to "Nacho Cheese Doritos" instead of just Doritos if one wanted the original flavor. Cool Ranch's closest cousin, Sour Cream and Onion (potato chips), had none of the subtlety and texture of CRD's, which is due to the non-grease factor of Doritos and their liberal use of salt.

After Cool Ranch's success, there were other failed attempts at spin-offs. These were obvious greedy crossovers, which, luckily, backfired. First there was the "Pizza Hut" flavor, which just tasted to me like Keeblers' failed "Suncheros", then followed "Taco Bell" flavor, which, while good, was exactly the same as the old "Taco" flavor from a decade before.

Now, three new flavors have appeared all at once. And a new advertising campaign, if you can call it that. First, the chips:

"Salsa Verde" is the best thing that's happened to Doritos since Cool Ranch, but I can understand if it isn't much of a commercial success. "New York Style Jalapeno Chips" have kinda cornered the market on hot chips, but "Salsa Verde", as is true with some of the best Dorito work, has a complexity to it more than just heat. To create a shake-on additive that simulates the flavor of cilantro is a benefit to all mankind.

"Smokin' Red BBQ" is a failure. They taste like someone cross-bred Nacho Cheese Doritos with a BBQ potato chip. The taste is muddy (as is the color of the chip) and leaves a horrible aftertaste with cola. BBQ does not go well with tortilla. BBQ is for steak and/or potato. When you get nachos at the bar when you watch the big game, what goes on it? Cheese, jalapenos, maybe some Tabasco if you swing that way, but BBQ sauce? No. Maybe some ground beef cut with BBQ before hand, but additional BBQ sauce? No. If you do so, you're weird.

"Doritos 3-D" is the real disaster. And the one that started the new push (its ad campaign included.) An obvious problem with these puffed out, so-called "3-D Doritos" is a common complaint about getting gypped on the bag. With so much air in the snack itself, not to mention the mysterious "settling" chips do during the shipment, you're lookin' at a whole lotta dead cheesy air when you open this bag. Which may not be a bad thing.

It took me a while to figure out what specifically bothered me about "3-D Doritos"--eventually I realized that they are nothing but overgrown Bugles. And, like Bugles, they have the odd knack at getting . . . cold and wet! When left on your coffee table! Ewww!

Somehow, and I can't begin to reason why, the act of blowing air into these triangles of corn totally changes the Nacho Cheese flavoring of traditional 2-D Doritos. Also, the corn chip is different . . . much more press-board, lacking some of that tortilla charm.

Not only is this an inferior product, but the marketing behind it is absurd, off-base, and directed to no one. I've suffered a year or so of "You're allowed to be loud!", and only tolerated it because Nacho Cheese and Cool Ranch Doritos were such stellar products. This new marketing campaign exists in a pre-David Letterman world where see-through commercial enterprises are accepted as "hot," "extreme" and, dare I say, "proactive". It is only one step removed from affixing stickers to bags of Doritos that say "As Seen On TV."

I speak, of course, of the insipid, un-funny and un-ironic ads where a pair of tits on legs enters a laundromat eating "3-D Doritos" and forces all the guys in there to . . . lose their concentration. Or, even better, walks through a library, eats a "Spicy Red BBQ" chip, and sets the sprinkler system off to the tune of "Smoke On The Water". Oh-oh wait! I can hardly type, I'm laughing so hard.

First off, anyone who makes a hobby of eating Doritos will not have supermodel dimensions like this woman, something I also think about when basketball stars shill for McDonald's french fries, as if that's good for their game. The woman's name is Ali Landry, I learn from www.Doritos.com in their "Ali Gallery", which, they think has got all the boys steamed up on the school yard. Listen--anyone with a modem can find plenty more interesting photos than these. But Doritos brass milks the whole thing for its Brighton Beach Memoirs potential. There's all of Ali's accomplishments, the various beauty contests she's won (they still have those?), hometown, dog's name . . . phone number? You wish! (I'm quoting.) Do I wish for Ali's phone number? Do I have some message I need to get to her? Who is the intended audience for this remark?

Worse than this, worse even than the real video "message" from Ali to "all her fans" from the set of her new Doritos commercial (as if she's even eaten a Dorito. Does she know what to do with the darker orange side? Maybe she can give me some good kelp n' rice cake tips . . . dirty model pre-feminist stank!), is the link to the homepage of Icheewawa, The Loudest Band on Earth, the official band of Doritos.

I don't want to get too deep into Icheewawa because it gets my blood pressure up too far. Icheewawa, the best Monkees band since the Heights, are a group of ethnically diverse wacky rockers who make funny faces and wear braids. They also host a bi-weekly chat at Doritos.com, where I'm sure the words "in your face" get used a lot. What amuses me so much about Icheewawa is that, in their "Bioze", the band members seem so very unimpressed and smug about their alleged fame and all the yadda yadda yaddas and lah lah lahs (again I quote.) As if ANYONE can't tell this is phony! There's a FUCKING FRITO-LAY LOGO at the bottom of the PAGE!!!!

It makes me want to tear my hair out! Not because advertising executives are trying to "pull one over on the kids", but because advertising executives are WELL-PAID!!!!!! Who OK-ed this rubbish!??! Why haven't they been fired?!?! What kid is skateboarding at the park listening to Icheewawa and saying to their buddy, "Dude, have you heard this new band? They're sponsored by Doritos. They're allowed to be loud."

I-I-I-I-Agh! Ugh! No Words! No more! I can't even describe it, just look for yourself. I----Ugh!

And it miffs me more because it's a good product. A quality product. Quality in that it is pure unadulterated junk, but quality all the same. They need not do all this. They've got some of the best snack products out there . . . why this? Calls to Frito-Lay's PR department went unanswered. Really. Check out their site and get back to me. I'm curious to hear feedback.

I just bought a bag of TACO last week in Hillsboro, Ore. They were labeled as being "back by popular demand." I hope they stick around for a long time. They were my one and only favorite chip back in the 1980s, before they switched to the "supreme" fomulation.

i remember with great fondness the taco flavored doritos from the 70's and early 80's. when i had friends stay over i always made sure mom bought that flavor. it was great getting that one chip in the bag that always seemed to have about 5 times as much seasoning as the other chips. then to wake up the next morning and still have that taste in your mouth was pure heaven. i think that whoever decided to mess with the recipe and go in with taco bell ought to eat taco bell food every meal for a month and be given only one square of toilet paper. shame on them for messing with perfection

Taco Doritos were like crack cocaine. I could make myself sick eating them. The flavor I remember as a kid are not the same as the ones they have now. Additionally, there used to be oine of those canned dips, called Enchalada Dip, that they don't make anymore. Taco Doritos and Enchalada Dip could not be beat.

Do not be misled. Frito Lay, has in fact, changed the formula on the "original" taco chips from the late 1960's to early 1970's. The bogus "taco" flavor that they produce today (in limited quantities) is a disgusting, cheap, flavorless, imitation of the "original" . The "original" taco did NOT have bogus sour cream, cheese flavor, artificial color and preservatives. Instead, it was the most delicious taco chip on the planet!!---PURE spices and taco flavor--that is it--pure and simple. I have called Frito Lay many times, but they just will not go back to the original formula (they even act like THEY don't remember it!!!---But WE DO AND WE WANT IT BACK!!! Michael Young, Rick and Bill---I totally agree with you!! Good to know there are other discerning people out there who know what is quality and what is good!!

Hold your enthusiasm you rookie Dorito snackers. The Taco Doritos being sold on the shelf today is not the original recipe. Much like the Whatchamacallit in the candy bar isle, the makers (or FDA) have decided to tinker with perfection. Enjoy second best my friends...but you're not enjoying the original.

I found a replacement for Taco Flavored Doritos. Tom's Taco Chips, they tasted just like the original Doritos Taco chips. The only problem is that Tom's was bought out last year and now I can't find any more of their Taco flavored chips. I looked on their website and they don't even offer it anymore. Doritos needs to bring back the original taco flavored chips, not the Taco Bell ones, those aren't even close. I do like the Chili Cheese Fritos now, but would still love to have my old favorite back in the store.

I loved taco doritos from the moment I tried them as a child. They had them in the Reno area until about 15 years ago. Then I couldn't find them anywhere. I also went on line only to find out too bad they aren't available in my area anymore. When I went back to Kenosha, WI, in 2000, low and behold there were my taco doritos...yummy...I bought a whole case of them and now that they are gone, I am seriously thinking of flying back just to buy more. SMile...Boy did they make a mistake not making them available to all.

Folks - Taco Doritos are my all time favorite. I got a wild hair a few months back, found them on the Doritos site, navigated the bowels of the site and found the actual stores where they are sold. Had friend in that area pick me up 5 bags and mail them to me. Received them, all 5 Taco, prepped myself for pure bliss - and bang - they changed the recipe. This is NOT the original and tastes like they added sour cream to it. They don't even look like original Taco flaoverd chips - remember the dark orange/brown powder. That's not what these are.

Needless to say - I'm bummed.

It seems taco flavored Doritos are, like "Tab", one of those things that not many people like but those that do are completely nuts about it.

I'm one of those people.

It's funny, if you search for taco flavored Doritos on the net you find links to pages within the Doritos website which now come up as errors because, in fact, the Doritos website is now a MUSIC SITE. I dare you to find any information about any Doritos product at all on that site. Doritos has transcended chipness and has become (so they would like to think) a brand to be stuck on a shirt or skateboard, not on a bag of chips. At the time of the original post it was amusing, but now it's just unbelievable.

Anyway, you can make something that sort of tastes like taco flavored Doritos by taking a bagful of Tostitos (or other oily unflavored tortilla chip), putting them in a baking dish, sticking them in the oven at 350 for a couple minutes, then dumping them into a bag in which you've placed some Old El Paso (or maybe Ortega, but not Taco Bell, it's all wrong - I mention Old El Paso because they sell theirs in a shaker now as if they know what we're doing with it) taco seasoning powder - add a little cheddar cheese powder or even the orange stuff from "EZ Mac" if you preferred the "Taco Bell" branded chips, shake vigorously, and then dump back into the Tostitos bag for eventual consumption.

Or you could do what I'm doing and try to find places to order taco chips on the net. Shop-Rite used to have the best taco chip, better even than Doritos, but they're long gone too. Yak back if you succeed, I suppose.

I've always known that keeping a proper perspective in life requires some emotional connectivity to our humble beginnings. Everyday challenges, at times, demand from us a moment of reminiscence.
A positive childhood experience that help us transcend beyond petty annoyances, or a major nervous breakdown.
I am now 45 years of age, the last time i tasted Taco Flavored Tortilla Chips by Doritos was when i was in grade school. I remember the taste very well, as if the neural pathways are etched in stone and can never be dismantled by any force known to man. My soul craves it. I've searched the highways and byways the Internet has to offer but to no avail. Can anyboby out there in cyberworld tell me how I can get a pack of these tortilla chips? It is not available in California.

Thank You,

Great article, very true. The Salsa Verde is the first thing since Cool Ranch that should have become another main chip. It should not be this hard to find thing. I also live in New England and cannot get them anywhere. In canada they have something similar, some jalapeno thing that they have on 3Ds. They were pretty good. I'd buy em if they were available here. Trying to get ahold of someone from doritos.com is next to impossible. Amazing. I'd order cases of these damn things. They also had flamin' doritos. Long gone. They had flamin' lays. Those were really good. Now they just have the flamin' cheetos, which are toned down.
They're too busy wasting money on stupid stupid stupid advertising when they should be listening to people that enjoy their product and not their asanine advertising campaigns.

I have to agree with basically everything this page says, i really like salsa verde doritos, and
have now spent considerable time trying to buy them. I live in New England, and according to my local distributor for frito
lay they dont ship them anywhere around here anymore. This has been very agrivating. I have also tried to buy them online with little success
especially since the web pages by frito lay are useless. the company refuses to ship products to individual people as well. I even tried calling up
a distributor out west, claiming that i was a small business owner that had a high demand for salsa verde doritos at my store, wondering if the guy there
would do my the favor of sending my a shipment of them. of course that didnt work. the only place i have been able to get them so far it www.drsoda.com but they only sell the
small size bags. i am debating on wether or not to buy any. they are 52 cents each, with some minimun shipping requirement, but that doesnt bother me because i want a lot
of them.
thank you for this page to share my anger

If Doritos is going to have a web site, why don't they use it to sell specialty products like Salsa Verde flavor Doritos.

Amazon.com took off because they sold books online that were hard to find. If we want Nacho cheese Doritos, we can go to the store. But they can still sell special flavors online. Covering the entire country, it definitely would be cost-efficient that way, if shipping them to all the stores isn't. But no, instead they have stupid, blaring marketing crap, and no way to contact them. They're missing out on potential business and instead wasting money on a failed campaign (BBQ flavor Doritos suck)
