Ry assembled these wonderful musicians to resurrects the "son"? Music has always been part of Cuban culture. He only used these great men to make lots of $$$$ and make a name for himself. This is a very political film and propaganda is spread through this film. Of course, most people are only facinated and enticed by the great music, but they overlook the under ground messages. The film producer and director did not give any credit to the man behind the film, the mastermainded and collabarator, Marcos Gonzalez. They put him in the background and took all the recognizion. Cooler focused on prerevolutionary musical styles and overlooked the most popular songs in comteporary Afro-Cuban music. He used these musicians and their culture to advertize his US imperialist ideology.

BVSC
Music is a treasure hunt. You dig and dig and sometimes you find something. In Cuba, the music flows like a river.---Ry Cooder

There's nothing more despicable than quaint cultural exploitation documentaries. To sit in a darkened theater on Houston Street and snicker at the backward lifestyle of Appalachian hicks or Tibetan mud farmers, even if it is under the guise of "learning about other cultures," is still an aesthetically hostile act. There needs to be a reason to film someone other than just because they fill a geographic checkbox for this sad niche market. There always always always needs to be a story.

Buena Vista Social Club is a one hundred and eighteen minute reminder of why cameras and microphones were invented. It is a concert film; it is a personal document; it is an ethnographic film; it is a travelogue; it is a political film; it is a nostalgia piece; it is a time capsule; it is a marketing tool to squeeze a few more units out of an already widely successful CD; it is a love letter; it is made up as it goes along; it is based on stories and songs generations old. It is Wim Wenders' best film, no minor comment.

Buena Vista Social Club tells the story of how composer/producer/guitarist/musicologist Ry Cooder went down to Cuba with a tape of some son music and the interest in making a record. What he didn't realize was that many of the aged musicians (one of them ninety years old, still smoking cigars) were still alive, living in obscurity and retirement. These are men who created the musical idiom Cooder was intrigued by. He records an album, it sells far greater than anyone anticipated, wins Grammys, and these men take off for the road, playing in Europe and, ultimately, Carnegie Hall.

The film flows slowly. From concert footage of some of the smokinest dates ever, to recording footage of the follow up album featuring Ibrahim Ferrer, the Nat "King" Cole of Cuba, a man who never leaves his cramped, shoddily furnished home without offering his wooden Saints shots of rum. Lazily, as though the summer heat has affected the film crew, we roam to discover each member of this extraordinary band. We meet Ruben Gonzales, one of the most respected living pianists (who, before Cooder's rediscovery did not even own a piano) alone in a giant empty banquet hall, exquisitely decorated, light pouring through the grand windows. The room was perhaps re-cordoned after the Revolution; it serves for children's acrobatics, not stately reception.

Strangely, this film begins to resemble many of Wenders' other films. It photographs Havana extensively, until the city, with its stray dogs and crashing surf on main thoroughfares, becomes a character (Alice In The Cities). It is about foreigners and observers (Wings of Desire). It is about revisiting the past (Paris, Texas). And the form, tracking camera, rigid framing, voice-over, is reminiscent of all his work. The opening montage of an old man asking where the Buena Vista Social Club once stood is eerie echo of Where is Potzdammer Platz?

There is no star, not even the music. The music is just an element in the greater whole of this myth, a myth all involved admit is being tweaked by all this meddling. The old-timers' scenes in midtown Manhattan are riveting, though. Without finger-pointing, we see the downside to Castro's Cuba: forgotten heroes, cut off from a life that could-have-been. Though Ferrer brags that Cubans can dismiss material things in a way that makes them superior to Americans, he chokes up at the sight of Radio City Music Hall, and wishes his family could return here.

This film had a narcotic effect on me. I left the theater scoffing air conditioning, happy to groove through the intolerable 95 degree heat, thoughts clouded by the beat of the son. I wondered which of my friends I could call up to play dominoes.

Subject: Heartache Poems: A Brazilian Gay Man Coming Out from the Closet
-- Feb 23, 2005 at 8:50AM
(Salvador, Bahia, BRAZIL. January,20th 2004). The book "HEARTACHE POEMS: A Brazilian Gay Man Coming Out from the Closet", by Valdeck Almeida de Jesus, published by iUniverse, Inc., doesn't contain pink love poems but deals with the feelings of a gay man who finds himself by and by. Valdeck, grown up in a small place in Brazil's northeast, tells about the ups and downs he experienced during his coming out and the quest for his own homosexual identity. Desire for love, fear, lust, happyness and the constant search for them are being related once in a serious way, then funny, then pugnacious, then metaphorical. The reader can enter the imagination of the author, where he partly finds himself and is partly encouraged to think.

A unique way to write

This isn't just other gay book on the shelf. Valdeck poems are enlightening and tell the chronicles of one gay man's soul; You will embrace it and share his life stories with your friends. Come walk through the closet door with Valdeck and discover this inspiring wonderful literature. Valdeck Almeida de Jesus was born and spent most of his life in Jequie, a small town of Bahia, Brazil. From his earliest recollections he's had to face life and its difficulties with a deep secret sexual longing. He was a gay man pretending to be straight for the love and respect of his family. His lovers, both men and women, drove his desire to write this book, his poems gave him the courage to leap into life out of his closet.

MEMORIAL DO INFERNO. A Saga da Família Almeida no Jardim do Éden, autoria Valdeck Almeida de Jesus
(press-release)

Oh forgot to mention something important: There are lots of wonderful contemporary Cuban music to buy in record stores all over the world. Check it out if you want to hear what Cubanslisten to. It might not have a slide guitarr in the background but I ensure you that they do fine without the saviour Cooder. It's all about marketeing and some have it some not. But if you make an effort you might find something even better than BVSC. At least have a listen…

Be careful with what you say about Cuban socialist culture. "…the downside to Castro's Cuba…cut off from a life that could-have-been.&quo t; is not very accurate. Castro's Cuba produces more music talents than most countries in the world. There are hundreds of men & women with fantastic musical telent thanks to Castro "regime". It might be wrong in many ways but i know for a fact that cuban musical education is one of the best in the world. Previous to the revolution fantastic musicians like the ones in BVSC had to play for rich tourists on country clubs. The same is developing now because of capitalist developments so don't blame Castro. Much more complicated than that… go home and study!

Candela
Faustino Oramas
Buena Vista Social Club

Ay candela, candela, candela me quemo así.
Ay candela, candela, candela me quemo aé.

bien placentero:
Y ahora si quieren bailar, búsquense otro timbalero!

Ay candela, candela, candela me quemo aé.

Oye Faustino Orama¹ y sus compañeros,
necesito que me apaguen el fuego.
Margarita llama pronto a los bomberos para
que vengan a apagar el fuego.
Oye, si estás perdida llama a los siete ceros,
y así vendrán mas pronto los bomberos.
Ay candela, candela, candela me quemo aé.
mama Aaaay!

You are an ass. Mr. Cooder's list of pre-BVSC credits are longer than my arm. He's a top notch slide guitar player, arranger, producer and movie score composer. To say he never had anything going in the US pre-BVSC is asinine. If so, why would his "discovery" ; of the group have gained so much attention. His past credits have given him a lot of clout in the industry.

movie itself is wonderful, but Ry Cooder is really nothing but some dude who really never had anything going in the United States until this big deal with the buena vista social club. His performance pretty much sums up his influence with the whole deal. These very talented performers could have had David Lee Roth come over and rouse up a stir over such talent. Ry Cooder shows nothing in the movie/documentry of such talented forgotten humans. He cannot even speak the lanugage. I was not impressed with him or his son. He was apprently sent on a mission by some other person who felt inspired by real talent. I really ejoyed the music, even while in London, the music was very popular in 1999. I was very unhappy with Ry Cooder and His "posse" and very impressed with the real talent of Cuba. Hope that Ry shared the wealth, because he surely did make his profit off of the most talented people he will ever come across. The CD es muy perfecto. Salud amigos...

I had the pleasure to stay at a b&b in Havana, and loved every moment I was there. You can believe everything in Cuba is a remarkable find for any one who loves culture, music, food, entertainment, and a people unspoiled.

I just finished watching the premier of Buena Vista Social Club on a local PBS channel here in Florida. As an admirer of music from the Carribean, I can only say this. The ensemble that Ry Cooder brought together through their stories as well as music transported my soul back to an era where life was lived with passion and music was the universal language of love.
For those few minutes of celluloid, I got lost in the rhythm and left behind any notion of seeking a political agenda in the film.By it's end, my eyes opened to a side a Cuba I never thought of. There is a richness and old world passion there that once transcended the affairs of State but is now overshadowed. Like the dinosaur, the men and women who made up this elite group, as well as the many younger artists they inspire today are doomed to extinction unless they can be shared with the world openly and be lauded for who THEY are. Would love to get a hold of some of their earlier music. Oh yeah, I'm polishing my dominoes too.

A PS to my comment above. Adrian may not have noticed, but the Cuban missile crisis happened nearly forty years ago and the USSR, which helped provoke it, collapsed about ten years ago. So why maintain the blockade if the main reasons for it have disappeared? It wouldn't have anything to do with the Cuban refugee vote in Florida, would it?

OK, so the woeful shortages of everything in Cuba from medicines to house-paint has nothing to do with the US blockade. So why impose the blockade in the first place? I would never say that ordinary Cubans are not having a tough time, whether it's caused by Castro personally (a childish American over-simplification if ever there was!) or by the blockade, but does Adrian really believe that Cubans would welcome back the good old days of Batista, when US gangsters like Myer Lansky practically ran the place? Come now, cobber...time to wake up!

Steve talks crap. Havana is in the state that it is today because of the vanity of one man - Fidel Castro. Castro is an old-time, charismatic, political thug who abhors democracy and human rights. However, this film, and the musicians featured both here and on the C.D. of the same name, stand as testiment to he fact that the human spirit can survive even under the harsh rule of a police-state. One day, hopefully soon, the dicatorship in Cuba will fall and the country can then re-join the community of civilsed, liberal, nations. I sincerely hope that we can then hear more of this glorious music. As for the comments about U.S. foreign policy, how would you have felt towards Cuba if you had been a resident of Florida during the Missile Crisis of '62, eh cobber?

When you look at the crumbling condition of Havana, it would be useful to remember that this is a result, not of any ill-will or mismanagement by the Castro government, but of the US blockade, one of the cruellest acts of international bastardry of modern times. Yes, a great movie, pulsing with a humanity obviously lacking in the framers of US foreign policy.

The band was brought to New York by, among other people, the producers of this film. In fact, the Carnegie Hall concert that closes out the film (still one of my favorite movies in 99, half a year later) was a financial loss until the sale of the BVSC documentary. It took a lot of string pulling and $$$ to get them to New York. Now that there is some lightening for "cultural exchange" with Cuba, you can't these guys OUTTA NYC. Every other day another member of BVSC is playing somehwere---and God Bless 'Em!

BTW---Woodstock was a total money loser until the movie came out, too.

Universal appeal? Few films have that, but BVSC has been held-over many many weeks now & is performing far better than anyone expected. It is one of the art-house hits of the summer (no Blair Witch, to be sure. . .) and might be one of most watched Wim Wenders films in years.

Thanks for the comments.

Saw this over the weekend and was blown away. Loved the CD when I first got it, 8 months ago. Seeing this adds multiple layers of emotional weight and enjoyment to what was already a transportive experience. I haven't broadly recommended this to everyone, simply because it should be seen by only those that can truely appreciate the craft and history that unfolds. I'm not sure (sadly) if it will universally appeal. **Loved the dominoes-line!**
