Tom Wopat as Frank Butler and Bernadette Peters as Annie Oakley in "Annie Get Your Gun"
Screw you.

Yeah, you heard me right: screw you. Granted, that's probably not the best line to start a review with, if one's goal is to gain the reader's good will. But I know what you're going to be thinking as you read this piece. You're going to be thinking "What kind of a real man goes to see a rootin' tootin' Irving Berlin musical starring Bernadette Peters? And didn't just get dragged by his girlfriend, but was actually excited to see it? What is he, some sort of fruit??" So I say again: screw you.

Yeah, I wanted to go see "Annie Get Your Gun". What's so wrong with that?? Irving Berlin's a cool dude who wrote the songs for one of my all time favorite movie musicals, Top Hat, and it's not just Bernadette Peters in the cast--Luke Duke (Top Wopat) is in it too. And all right, I'll admit it, I like Bernadette Peters. She's got a good set of pipes.

It's never been an easy thing to explain to my poker buddies, but I'm a straight male who digs show tunes. And I like all singing, all dancing musical extravaganzas. I'm sorry, maybe it indicates some sort of testosterone deficiency, but that's the way I feel. So when I saw those posters, with Bernadette and a couple of six shooters . . . hell, I couldn't resist.

And "Annie Get Your Gun" delivers pretty nicely. Bernadette is fabulous (whoops, I mean . . . er, hot) as usual as the backwoods naif turned international sensation Annie Oakley, and Tom Wopat, who I last saw as Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls" (a show I swoon just to think about. No wait, not swoon. Let's try, like, countenance stoically) is a charismatic presence.

What I find most exciting about "Annie Get Your Gun", a musical retelling of the story of sharpshooter Annie Oakley and her romance with rival Frank Butler, is the fact that it's pure old-school. In this era of a Broadway filled with on-stage helicopters and falling chandeliers, it's reassuring to see a show where the audience bursts into applause when the stage rotates. But that's the nature of this show--it's all singing, all dancing, no pyrotechnics. And that's really refreshing to see.

The first act of the show is the more leisurely of the two. Bernadette's Annie gets some nice numbers--"Doin' What Comes Natur'lly", which is sung with three talented young child cast members, the comic "You Can't Get a Man with a Gun", and a slow piece I really liked called "Moonshine Lullaby"--and Tom Wopat gets to shine in a number called "My Defenses are Down", but there are no real showstoppers.

That changes when the second act rolls around, when it seems like the showstoppers start tumbling one after another. Annie's "I Got the Sun in the Morning" [and the moon at night] comes off beautifully, and Annie and Frank's comical/romantical number "An Old Fashioned Wedding" is just fantastic. But Peters and Wopat really get to show off their chemistry in the show's funniest number "Anything You Can Do", sung during a competition to determine the sharpshooting "champeen" of the world.

"Annie Get Your Gun" makes no pretense to break any new ground. It's got classic songs, presented in a traditional way. But it's got enough great sets and costumes, whimsical choreography, and memorable performances to make for a worthy night at the theatre.

My school will be performing this for a fall musical next year and I've been reading up on this to see if there's a part I'm interested in. I know there've been earlier comments about Dolly Tate but I have to know...does she sing in this play and if so what's the approximate range? I can sing but I'd just be more comfortable with a big acting part. Any help would be awesome!

Heyy, i saw your message about wanting to know more about Dolly Tate. My school just did Annie Get Your Gun, and i had the part of Dolly. She's such a fun character, really diverse. She's Winnie's older sister9 I've heard that in some versions she's her mom) and is extremely racist. SHe is dead set against Winny marrying Tommy because he is one half Indian. She does everything she can to keep them apart. She laso does everything she can to keep Annie and Frank apart. She has been in love with Frank for ever, althoguh he broke up with her a few months before the play is set. She even breaks the sight on Annie's gun, although she gets caught by Charlie Dvenport and Chief Sitting Bull. She's such a fun character mainly because she thinks she is better than every one else, in an almost superior way. I was so upset when the production was over, but i hope this helped you get information.

The play was a dramatic display of creativity and effort. The set was an extra ordinary display of craftsmanship with huge displays that stretch out over the audience. The set include bright vivid colours and it was beautifully crafted woodwork was reminiscent of the west during 1880’s. The scenery help make the play more realistic.
The costumes were also outstanding. Considering that they were working under a limited budget, they fully utilized what they had. The costumes made the Indians believably real and the cowboys come to life like they were actually real.
The cast was a stunning one with Kristen Leighton (sp?) Playing Annie, and being a musical she had to be a good singer and boy howdy was she ever. She was hitting those high notes and everything. And not to be out done Frank Butler, who was wonderfully portrayed by Andy Varner, sang great. In the song “Anything you can do” showcased both of their talents in an exquisite battle in musical ability, in which I would say that Kristen did a better job. The special effects were also cool despite their complete lack a big explosions, kung fu style fight scenes and car chase. My favorite was when she shot the bird off her head, which caused many to ask how they did that, I should tell you that it was a string attached to the bird that was attached when Bethany Whompal was putting on her hat.
The play also feature a gripping dance sequence in which Indians start dancing and then Annie start sing a song, and being a musical one would expect that. Overall I thought that the play was outstanding. If Simon from American Idol was there I am sure he would clap and say a compliment. On a scale of 1 through 23, 23 being the best I would give it a 21. The loss of two points comes from the fact my armrest was broken in my seat and it kept poking me and was quite annoying. But it was good and I would see it again if it was shown again. Good night and God bless.

oh my mother was frightened by a shotgun they say. that's why i'm such a wonderful shot. I'd be out in the cactus and i'd practice all day, and now tell me what have i got. I'm quick on the trigger, with targets not much bigger than a pinpoint i'm number one, but my score with a feller, is lower than a celler oh you can't get a man with a guuuun.when i'm with a pistol, i sparkle like a crystal, yes i shine like the morning sun, but I lose all my luster, when with a bronco buster, yeah you can't get a man with a guuun. with a guun, with a gun, oh you can't get a man with a gun. I'm cool brave and daring, to see a lion staring, when i'm out with my remington, but a look from a mister, will raise a fever blister oh you can't get a man with a gun. The gals with umbrellers, are always out with fellers in the rain or the blazing sun, but a man never trifles, with gals who carry rifles oh you can't get a man with a gun. no you can't not you can't no you caaaaan't. with a guun, with a gun, no you can't get a man with a gun. a man may be mighty, he'll even buy a nightie for a gal who he thinks is fun. but they don't buy pajamas, for pistol packin' mamas and you can't get a hug from a mug with a slug oh you can't get a man with a guuuuun

I just recently got the roll of Dolly Tate in my highschool's production of Annie Get Your Gun, and I'm curious why her last name is Tate and the last name of her brother is Davenport. I want to know if she's married or divorced or widowed so that I can develop the character correctly. Does anybody know the answer to that?

Saw AGYG on Broadway two weeks ago with Crystal Bernard ("Wings") as Annie. Terrific! She fit the part great. To Kelsie - Jessie is one of Annie's young siblings, a fairly small part. Winnie (not Minnie) Tate is a much larger role with a featured song, "Who Do You Love, I Hope".

I have seen the road show of Annie Get Your Gun 5 times. And now I'm headed for NYC to see it on Broadway. And it is all because of Tom Wopat. I was hooked the first time I saw him here in Houston in December. His voice is outstanding. I had no idea his voice had such a wide range. I have some of his country music. Needless to say I bought both the Annie Get Your Gun and the Still of The Night CD's. I pretty much play them on a daily basis. Thanks for keeping me entertained Tom. And for those of you looking for the lyrics to the songs from Annie Get Your Gun, just look inside the cover of the cd. They are right there.

I am 13 years old and play the part of Jessie, one of Annie's siblings in our local theater production. It is written in the script with Annie having four siblings: Minnie- 15, Jessie- 13, Nellie- 9, and Little Jake- 7. How was the original script written, and since this was based on a true story, how many siblings did she really have?

Rex did fantastic, and larry was hillarious! they all were just so great!! my uncle played in the orcastra (Which was on stage, and was awesome) so later on we went to a resteraunt, and rex sat 3 seats away from us with his wife, and his son, gatspy. he talked to us the whole time, practically!!
