Hi, Leon Sherman, in his pre "dog-days" babysat me a few times in the bronx, and worked as a female impersonator at several nightclubs my mom also worked in. I know it sounds crazy, but my childhood was spent in many clubs because it was the late sixties, and the family story everyone laughs about that I got confused because sometimes she showed up as a boy, and sometimes as a girl, and I had to have it explained to me that he dressed up to perform. Kids aren't born prejudiced because I just said ok, and it never much at all until my mom brought me to the movie "Dog Day Afternoon" and asked if anyone seemed familiar, and then she connected the dots for me. Watching the movie now for the first time since then really brought back those NYC memories.

Dog Day Afternoon (Sidney Lumet, 1975):
Dog Day Afternoon
On a hot August day in 1972, Sonny Wortzik and two other men entered a bank in Brooklyn, pulled out guns, and tried to rob the place. Thus begins the comedy of errors known as Dog Day Afternoon.

Before any money is even seen, one of the men has bailed, leaving only Sonny (Al Pacino) and his buddy Sal (John "Fredo" Cazale) to get the job done. Problem 2 is that there's hardly any cash in the vault. Sonny got bum information, and the guys in the armored truck had just picked up the money, not delivered it.

But no matter. Sonny's gonna pack away the few thousand dollars he can grab, and get the hell out of there. Problem 3 comes up pretty suddenly: there are hundreds of cops gathering outside, and they have their guns squarely pointed at the bank.

Now it's a hostage situation, with Sonny and Sal in charge of the bank manager and 7 or so female tellers (Carol Kane is in there somewhere). There are also spectators--thousands of Brooklynites watching from behind the barricades, or on television, and cheering Sonny on as he riles the crowd into an anti-cop, pro-working man frenzy. Sonny tries to negotiate with the cops outside (they're led by Charles Durning, and also feature Lance Henriksen in his first notable role as Murphy, a tough cop in a pink polyester suit). Sonny orders up a helicopter, and an airplane to fly them to some other country, preferably Algeria. Or maybe Holland. (Sal wants to go to Wyoming, but Sonny informs him that that's not another country.)

He also asks to see his wife, and when "she" shows up, she turns out to be Leon (Chris Sarandon with a fright-wig hairdo and a zombified look in his eyes), fresh out of Bellevue after downing a few handfuls of pills in an effort to extricate himself from Sonny's grip. Sonny and Leon were actually married in a church ceremony, and it turns out that Sonny was robbing the bank in part to pay for a sex change operation for his beloved Leon.

The gay thing probably loses some of the crowd's good will, but it doesn't matter. Sonny's got the hostages, he's in charge, and he's going to get his airplane and get his ass out of the country.

Dog Day Afternoon is funny, suspenseful, and all that other good stuff. It's classic Sidney Lumet, up there with his best pictures, like Serpico, Twelve Angry Men, Fail-Safe, and The Verdict. It's a bummer that dude hasn't made a decent picture since 1990, with Q&A. But I went to see Gloria, and I went to see Night Falls on Manhattan, and I'll probably keep trying, with every successive picture, hoping Lumet can recapture that old glory.

But meanwhile, there's always VHS and Dog Day Afternoon.

I do not know where Sonny is now....but a few yrs back he was staying at the same hotel PRINCEPE where I stayed. He show'd me clippings and told me why he robbed the bank. He was upset because he couldn't find a man dressed like a woman in San Jose. I told him where he could find all he wanted.....in Panama City Panama. I never saw hm after that....but it was him. I asked him if he would really have killed people and shoved them out the front door and he said that the sure would. He was kinda sleezy and I would not have personally trusted him. This was probably 10 +- yrs ago. I think he went to Panama, as I never saw him after that.....thanx

Why is this a guy movie? This film has many themes, love being one of them. It's a very humanitarian film, therefore reaching both sexes. Is there such a thing as a guy movie? Is there such a thing is a chick flick? Or, are these labels just thrown at us?

Searched the internet. John Wojtowicz(AKA: Sonny Wortzick) expired January 2006 of cancer. He was sentenced to serve 20 years in prison, but only served 7 years. His accomplice, Sal, actually did die as depicted in the movie, although, he was only 18 years of age. John sold the rights to his story to Warner Bros. for $7,500 and 1% of net profit the film would gross. It sounds like he had problems with the studio honoring their end of the deal, so he took them to court (so to speak) while still in prison. John used some of the money from the film to pay for Leon Sherman to have a sex change operation. Leon Sherman had the operation in 1973 and became Elizabeth Debbie Edan. It sounds like John and Liz remained in contact until she expired in 1986 after a bout with pneumonia; she had AIDS. Two documentaries about John Wojtowicz and the bank robbery are in existence, they are as follows: The Third Memory 2000 and Based on a True Story 2005. The Chase Manhattan Bank it is now a Medical Clinic, the address is 450 Ave P, Brooklyn, NY.

Always heard about the movie, but just saw it for the very first time. I really enjoyed it and I can't believe it's a true story. Amazing. I notice no-one has made any comments in a while, just thought I would add a little something. I'll be doing some research and adding any new information I find on the internet.

I think John's story is very important and has been somewhat trivialized. It is very telling about how our society treats the less privileged and the desparation it creates. Went to the sites listed below, but they don't work. Any other suggestions.

I thought there was a law that made it impossible for convicts to profit from their crimes. If this is true, then how could the real Wortzik/Wojtowicz live off the residuals of the film? Something is amiss.

John lives in New York and is a sweetheart.I just came from seeing him at a dance party given by the Virginia Film Festival. Although he is in a wheelchair, it doesn't stop him from getting up and doing a little" bump and grind" as he puts it. Two kisses on the cheeks and one on the lips. He's a very nice guy.

The "Third Memory", a film by Pierre Huyghe will be shown at the University of Virginia Sept. through November. It is a film that tells the events of the bank robbery as remembered by Wojtowicz. I haven't seen the movie but under one of the movie stills it states the time of the movie as 9 minutes while I have read it was 20 minutes. Anyone know the actual time of the movie?

I had a tempestuous gay relationship with john wojtowicz for most of the 1980's in New York City, I also knew the late Liz Eden, Mr. Wojtowicz and myself attended her funeral in Rochester New York in 1987. The day I meet John I felt he was a little boy in a grown up body, some twenty years later, I feel the same , He was one of the loves of my life. I speak often to his mother and on occasion to him. I should write a book to set the record streight about so much inaccurate information about him.

His name was actualy John Wojtowicz he only served 7 years and he now lives in new york on welfare, with his mother. "leon" actualy Ernest Aron but later Liz Eden died of aids related pneunonia. i believe she wrote a book but about herself, not john. both were prominent members of the NY gay community and there is quite a bit know about them. also there is a movie called "third memmory" (1999) whitch features John re-enacting the robbery as it realy happened.
